Rewriting the UN Declaration of Human Rights

NOVICE COMMITTEE

This committee asks you to step away from many of the Model UN traditions that you’ve been trained around, and step up for a new challenge. Conventional parliamentary procedure, resolution groups, and role-playing have no place in this room, leaving you armed solely with your ideas. The objective of this committee is to rewrite the 1948 United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. We will be adopting a form of debate similar to that of the House of Commons, and we will debate proposals written by you, the Members. You should look beyond simply rephrasing existing clauses and form new ideas that respond to current issues. Consider how topics of the environment and technology might be presented in a new Declaration of Human Rights. This committee is meant to be a true marketplace of ideas, and delegates are encouraged to evaluate global challenges and think about what the ethical basis of the UN’s actions should be.
