UNSC II: Intervention in Syria
What began as a democratic protest against the authoritarian government of Bashar Al-Assad has, eleven years and half a million casualties later, devolved into a brutal conflict with no end in sight. Syria is now an arena for battles between regional powers, from Russia and Turkey to Iran and Israel. The transformation from civil war to international conflict poses a challenge to the world. Is foreign intervention in Syria just a return to the imperialism of a century ago or are countries justified in taking the fight to strongmen and terrorists? This committee will examine the role of the international community in Syria and what part, if any, they should play in its solution. This dual-delegation Security Council committee will debate the future of UN policy in Syria and chart a course for the conflict’s resolution.
